The Department of Consumer Affairs notified the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules, 2026 on 10 September 2026, which will tighten oversight of online marketplaces from 1 January 2027. E-commerce entities will have to comply with the 2023 Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns through a mandatory yearly self-audit and a publicly displayed compliance certificate, alongside stricter disclosure of search and ranking parameters and sponsored listings, a new requirement to show a genuine prior price before advertising any discount, and fuller disclosure of seller details and, for imported goods, the country of origin. The amendments replace the 2020 e-commerce rules and follow years of complaints about manipulative design and misleading pricing on Indian shopping platforms.
