Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on 6 October 2026 launched Fleet Support Ship 1 (FSS-1) at Hindustan Shipyard Limited in Visakhapatnam, laid the keel of FSS-5, and inaugurated the shipyard's upgraded Slipway-4 and a 300-tonne Goliath Crane. FSS-1 is the first of five 43,500-tonne fleet support ships being built for the Indian Navy and entered the water just 18 months after its steel cutting. The upgraded slipway and crane will let the shipyard build and launch vessels of up to 45,000 deadweight tonnes, a significant expansion of its capacity for large, complex platforms.
