India retained its 131st position among 145 countries in the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Index 2026, with its overall gender parity score standing at 64.5 percent, below the global average of 69.2 percent. Iceland topped the index, followed by Finland and Norway. India's gender parity score has risen by 4.3 percentage points since 2006, a gain the report attributes mainly to progress in educational attainment, even as women remain underrepresented in roles carrying significant economic and political influence.
