Jindal Steel, working with the CSIR Central Road Research Institute, has earned a Guinness World Records title for building the longest road constructed exclusively with processed steel slag aggregates, a 1.85 kilometre four lane divided stretch at Raigarh in Chhattisgarh. The road used around two lakh tonnes of steel slag, a byproduct of steel making, which was processed through ageing, metal recovery, crushing and grading before being used across the pavement's full depth to withstand heavy commercial traffic. Jindal Steel and CSIR-CRRI have signed a technology transfer agreement to extend the method elsewhere, a step that could cut dependence on quarried natural aggregates for road building.
