The Supreme Court set aside elections to 50 wards, 28 in Patiala Municipal Corporation and 22 in Dharamkot Municipal Council in Moga district, after a fact finding committee it had appointed found that nomination papers were snatched, torn or destroyed and candidates assaulted or threatened during the Punjab municipal polls. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant directed that fresh elections in these wards be completed within six weeks, and asked the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to set up a monitoring committee of a retired High Court judge to oversee the process.
