The National Shipping Board held its first Sagar Samvad in New Delhi on 24 August 2026, themed around the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said India plans to add 100 ships to its merchant fleet over the next five years, while Minister of State Shantanu Thakur noted that India currently pays close to 75 billion dollars a year in freight to foreign shipping lines to move cargo including crude oil, gas, coal and urea. The Board proposed a five point roadmap covering fiscal reforms, assured cargo support, access to competitive financing, regulatory streamlining and improved ease of doing business. The Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 envisages investments of nearly Rs 80 lakh crore, with a goal of ranking India among the world's top five ship owning nations.
