The Green Revolution dramatically raised food-grain yields by concentrating breeding efforts on a small number of high-yielding varieties, grown across vast contiguous areas under similar input regimes. This uniformity delivered short-term food security at scale, but it has also narrowed the genetic base of staple crops actually grown in farmers' fields, even as seed banks preserve thousands of traditional varieties in cold storage.
