Agriculture's greenhouse-gas footprint comes not only from methane released by livestock and rice paddies, but from land-use change itself: clearing forest for new farmland releases stored carbon immediately, while the replacement cropland typically sequesters far less carbon than the forest it replaced ever did. Expanding farmland to feed a growing population can therefore raise emissions on two fronts at once, from the clearing itself and from the lower ongoing carbon storage of the land afterward.
