India's working-age population is projected to keep growing for another two decades even as fertility rates fall, a demographic window many analysts call an opportunity, provided enough productive jobs are created to absorb new entrants to the labour force. Labour laws that make hiring and firing costly for larger firms are often cited as one reason why much of India's job growth has occurred in smaller, informal enterprises rather than the larger firms that tend to offer more stable, better-paid employment.
