Choosing how to allocate one's savings is one of the most consequential financial decisions a person makes, yet many put off that choice indefinitely. We crave certainty about the future and instinctively picture any volatile asset as dangerous and value-destroying. We resent see-sawing returns and any loss of control, and would rather keep our money still, unproductive but apparently safe. Yet no asset is truly free of risk: employers close, home values fall, banks fail, bonds default, governments stumble, and once-admired companies vanish. Still, one cannot plan a life around the idea that every extreme scenario will strike at once, since these severe risks rarely converge together.
