A child's grief over a broken toy is total for as long as it lasts, and their delight over a small kindness is equally undiluted, because a child has not yet learned to qualify a feeling before allowing it. An adult, receiving the same small kindness, is more likely to weigh it, wonder about the giver's motive, or compare it against some larger disappointment sitting nearby in their mind, and in that weighing, some of the kindness's original brightness is inevitably lost.
