Road crashes kill and maim on a scale that would be treated as an emergency if the deaths arrived all at once rather than a few at a time. The measures that would prevent most of them are unglamorous and well understood: enforced speed limits, safer junction design, helmets, restraints. None of these attracts much attention or money. Trauma centres, by contrast, are built, staffed and funded, and a new one is announced with some fanfare. Both matter, but only one of them stops the injury from happening, and it is the other that we keep choosing to expand.
