There is an old comfort in the idea that the person who designs a system is answerable only for whether it works. It was never quite true, and it is harder to maintain now that a scheduling rule written in one office sets the hours of people it will never meet. To say that consequences belong to someone else is to claim the authority of the expert while declining the responsibility that goes with it. Nor does the opposite posture help, in which every failure is laid at the door of technique and the designer is treated as the author of all social harm. The honest position is narrower and more demanding: build well, and remain accountable for what the thing you built does once it is out in the world.
