A map is often taken for a small copy of the world, differing from it only in size. It is nothing of the kind. Every map leaves out almost everything, and the interest lies in what it chooses to keep. A road atlas erases rivers that a boatman would have called the only real routes; a revenue map records boundaries and forgets the grazing grounds that crossed them. What survives on the sheet is what the people who commissioned it needed to see, and what vanishes is not thereby unimportant. To read a map well is to keep asking what is not on it.
