Consider the following statements:

Statement I: The troposphere is considerably thicker at the equator (extending to roughly 18 km) than at the poles (extending to roughly 8 km).

Statement II: Strong convectional heating and vigorous vertical air currents at the equator push the tropopause to a much greater height than the relatively weak convection found at the poles.
