With reference to January isothermal maps of the world, consider the following statements:

1. Isotherms deviate sharply from their otherwise broadly west-east alignment as they cross from oceans onto continents and back, reflecting the differing thermal behaviour of land and water.

2. The pronounced northward bend of isotherms in the North Atlantic in January partly reflects the moderating effect of warm ocean currents, such as the Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic Drift.
