It is difficult to predict how a warming climate will influence the spread and severity of crop pests in the years ahead. There is a real danger that shifting weather patterns could make certain pest outbreaks far more common across every farming region, potentially on a devastating scale. Part of the difficulty is that generations of selective breeding have narrowed the genetic diversity of most high-yield food crops. These varieties are excellent performers under today's farming conditions, but genetic traits that offer no immediate commercial advantage have gradually been bred out of them. This serves yield in the short run but weakens resilience to sudden change. A new, or even a previously minor, pest could suddenly devastate a crop that has been bred into genetic uniformity.
