Indian Handicrafts and Textiles, Explained
The GI tag system, and the major named weaves, embroideries, metalwork, pottery and painting crafts UPSC tests by place, community and technique.
India's handicraft traditions are not a loose bundle of "folk art". Each major craft is tied to a specific place, a specific community of artisans, and a specific technique that took shape under a particular patron, whether a temple, a royal court, or a trading network. That place-community-technique triangle is exactly what UPSC tests: which weave comes from which town, what makes its technique distinct from a neighbouring one, and which institutional mechanism (the Geographical Indication tag) now protects that identity in law. This note covers the major textile weaving traditions, embroidery styles, and non-textile crafts (metalwork, wood and lacquer work, pottery, and painting-on-cloth), plus the GI system itself as an institutional topic in its own right.
The Geographical Indication (GI) tag: what it actually protects
A Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities, a reputation, or characteristics that are essentially attributable to that place of origin. Article 22 of the WTO's TRIPS Agreement requires member states to protect such indications, and India complied through the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, administered by the Geographical Indications Registry, based in Chennai, under the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks.
A few precise points UPSC likes to test on the mechanism itself:
- A GI tag does not belong to one individual producer. It is registered in the name of an association, cooperative, or authority representing the producers of that region (for instance, a weavers' welfare association for Banarasi sarees), and any producer within the defined geographical area who meets the standard can use the tag.
- It protects a collective, place-based identity, unlike a trademark, which protects one company's brand. A GI tag on Kanjeevaram silk does not stop a mill in Surat from weaving silk sarees, but it does stop that mill from calling its saree "Kanjeevaram" or "Kanchipuram silk" unless it is actually woven in the Kanchipuram region by the registered process.
- Once granted, a GI registration is valid for ten years and can be renewed indefinitely.
- India's first product to receive a GI tag was Darjeeling tea, in 2004 to 2005, registered under application numbers 1 and 2. Pochampally Ikat, application number 4, was the first handloom or textile product to receive a GI tag, a distinct and separate record from Darjeeling tea's overall "first GI" status.
- Beyond handicrafts, the GI list also covers agricultural products (Basmati rice, Alphonso mangoes) and foodstuffs, but the handicraft and textile GIs are the largest single category and the one this chapter concentrates on.
Silk brocades: Banaras and Kanchipuram
Banarasi brocade, woven in and around Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, is built on fine silk richly worked with zari, threads historically made of silver wire coated in gold and wound around a silk or cotton core. Its defining technique is the jacquard-attachment loom, where devices called the jala, pagia, and naka are fitted to a conventional handloom to control which warp threads lift for a given pass of the shuttle, letting the weaver build complex, repeating figured patterns (kalga, a paisley-like floral motif, and bel, a creeper border, are named motif types) directly into the cloth rather than embroidering them afterward. The design vocabulary shows visible Mughal influence: intricate floral and foliate motifs sit alongside the jali (net-like lattice work) and meenakari (enamel-style colour work within the zari) that give a finished Banarasi saree its characteristic metallic shimmer. "Banaras Brocades and Sarees" received its GI certificate in 2009, registered to a group of weaver associations including the Banaras Bunkar Samiti.
Kanjeevaram silk, from Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, follows a different logic. The saree's body and its pallu (the decorative end-piece) are traditionally woven as two separate pieces on the loom and then joined by an interlocking technique, strong enough that the join does not show and does not tear even if the rest of the saree wears out. The weave typically uses three threads: two threads of pure mulberry silk twisted together, plus a zari thread. By tradition the silk itself often comes from Karnataka (Kanchipuram is a weaving centre, not always the raw-silk source) while the zari historically came from Surat. Motifs draw on temple architecture and nature: rudraksham (a border pattern named for rudraksha beads), gopuram (temple-tower shapes), and paired bird motifs like mayilkan (peacock-eye) and kuyilkan (nightingale-eye). Kanchipuram had a weaving tradition tracing back to sarees woven for temple deities centuries ago, and the modern industry received formal GI recognition in 2005 to 2006.
Ikat: resist-dyeing before the thread is even on the loom
Ikat is a resist-dyeing technique applied to the yarn itself, not to the finished cloth: bundles of yarn are tied off section by section and dyed in stages before weaving even begins, so the pattern is "programmed" into the thread and only emerges once weaving starts. Pochampally Ikat, from Bhoodan Pochampally in Telangana, is distinguished by double ikat, where both the warp and the weft threads are separately tie-dyed and then woven so their patterns align on the loom, the most technically demanding form of the craft, producing a distinctive slightly blurred geometric edge rather than a sharp print-like line. This is different from single ikat traditions elsewhere in India (such as parts of Odisha's ikat, which resist-dyes only the weft or only the warp) and different again from bandhani or bandhej, the tie-and-dye technique of Gujarat and Rajasthan, which resist-dyes the finished woven cloth itself by tying thousands of tiny knots into it before dyeing, rather than dyeing the thread before weaving. Pochampally Ikat was India's first handloom or textile product to receive a GI tag (application number 4), and the town is sometimes called the "Silk City" of Telangana for the density of ikat weaving households there.
Cotton and silk weaves of the Narmada valley: Chanderi and Maheshwari
Two related but distinct weaving towns sit close together on the Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. Chanderi, whose weaving tradition is documented from around the 13th century, when Koshti weavers are recorded settling there, is known for an exceptionally lightweight, sheer fabric achieved by weaving with very fine, low-twist yarn, traditionally cotton, with silk warp introduced later, giving Chanderi cloth its characteristic translucent, almost glass-like texture and a fine golden shimmer from the zari booti (small woven motifs) scattered across the field. It received its GI tag in 2004.
Maheshwari weaving, from the town of Maheshwar, developed under the direct patronage of the Holkar queen Ahilyabai Holkar in the late 18th century, who is credited with inviting master weavers, including some from Surat and Malwa, to her capital to weave garments for the royal household. Maheshwari sarees are typically cotton-silk blends with a distinctive reversible border, woven so the border pattern reads correctly from both the front and the back of the fabric, and often carry stripes, checks, and narrow, geometric temple-border designs rather than Chanderi's fine floral booti. Maheshwari received its GI tag in 2012.
Embroidery: Phulkari and Chikankari
Phulkari, meaning "flower work", is a darning-stitch embroidery tradition from Punjab, worked from the reverse side of coarse, hand-spun cotton cloth (khaddar) using untwisted silk floss called pat. Because the darning stitch is worked in long, floating stitches across the reverse, the finished front surface catches light unevenly, giving Phulkari its distinctive optical shimmer. Historically it was a domestic, not commercial, craft: mothers and grandmothers embroidered phulkari shawls (odhnis) as part of a daughter's wedding trousseau, and the tradition long crossed Punjab's religious communities, practised by Hindu, Sikh, and Muslim households alike. A fully covered, densely embroidered variant is called bagh ("garden"), where the ground cloth is no longer visible beneath the stitching, distinguishing it from lighter phulkari where the base khaddar still shows through. Phulkari received its GI tag in 2010.
Chikankari, by contrast, is a white-on-white shadow embroidery tradition centred on Lucknow, worked on fine, sheer fabric (originally muslin) with white thread, so the design reads through subtle texture and shadow rather than colour contrast. Its most distinctive stitch is the murri (or phanda), a tiny knotted stitch that creates a raised, grain-like texture used to fill floral motifs, alongside dozens of other named stitches, artisans traditionally distinguish over thirty. Local tradition credits Mughal patronage, sometimes specifically Empress Nur Jahan, for popularising the craft in the Lucknow region, though the fully developed Awadhi form is generally dated to Nawabi-era Lucknow. Chikankari holds a GI tag registered to the Lucknow region.
Metalwork: Bidriware and Dhokra
Bidriware, from Bidar in Karnataka, is a blackened metal inlay craft developed under the Bahmani Sultanate from around the 14th century. Objects (traditionally hookah bases, vases, and boxes) are cast from an alloy of zinc and copper, roughly in a ratio of sixteen parts zinc to one part copper, chosen specifically because zinc oxidises to a deep, even black. The caster engraves a design into the cast surface, and a craftsman hammers pure silver (or sometimes gold) wire or flattened strips into the engraved grooves. The piece is then polished and treated with a paste made from a special soil, traditionally sourced from the grounds of the old Bidar fort, mixed with ammonium chloride, which oxidises every exposed part of the metal surface to a matte black while leaving the inlaid silver untouched and bright, the source of Bidriware's signature "black gold" contrast. It received its GI tag in 2006.
Dhokra (also spelled Dokra) is an entirely different metal tradition: lost-wax casting, one of the oldest metal-casting methods known, used in India for several thousand years. A clay core is coated with a layer of beeswax, which the artisan shapes and details by hand (often as thin threads of wax laid onto the surface, giving Dhokra figures their characteristic fine linear, almost woven-looking surface texture), the wax-covered core is then coated again in clay and heated, melting the wax out through a channel (hence "lost wax") and leaving a mould into which molten brass is poured; the clay is finally broken away to reveal the cast piece, which means every Dhokra piece is technically one-of-a-kind, the mould cannot be reused. The craft takes its common name from the Dhokra Damar community of itinerant metalworkers, historically associated with West Bengal, though the technique is practised by tribal artisan communities across a wide belt of central and eastern India, including Bastar in Chhattisgarh (associated with the Ghadwa community and closely tied historically to the erstwhile Bastar kingdom's patronage), West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, and parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Several regional variants hold separate GI tags: Bastar Dhokra (2008), and Bengal Dokra and Adilabad Dokra (2018).
Wood, lacquer and pottery: Channapatna and Jaipur
Channapatna toys, from Channapatna town in Karnataka's Ramanagara district, are turned-wood toys and dolls finished in a distinctive glossy lacquerware technique. The craft is traditionally traced to the reign of Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore in the late 18th century, who is credited with inviting Persian artisans skilled in lacquer-turnery to train local craftsmen. The wood traditionally used is Wrightia tinctoria, a soft, light local wood known locally as aale mara or hale mara, easy to turn on a lathe and to colour evenly. Colour is applied using natural, vegetable-based dyes (from seeds, bark, and other plant sources) while the piece spins on the lathe, then sealed and polished with natural lac to give the characteristic smooth, bright finish, a process that also makes the toys non-toxic and safe for young children, a point often used to market the craft today. Channapatna toys hold a GI tag.
Blue pottery, associated above all with Jaipur, is unusual among Indian pottery crafts in that it is not made from clay at all. The material is a fritware or "dough" mixture of ground quartz stone powder, powdered glass, Fuller's earth (multani mitti), borax, and gum, fired at a relatively low temperature and glazed in a limited, signature palette dominated by cobalt blue with white and, sometimes, green or yellow. The technique itself is of Turko-Persian origin, part of a wider Islamic ceramic tradition that reached the subcontinent through Central Asia and the Mughal courts; it is generally understood to have been brought specifically to Jaipur under the patronage of Maharaja Ram Singh II in the 19th century, who invited artisans trained in the technique to the city. Motifs are drawn heavily from nature (birds, flowers, foliage), with Persian-style geometric borders. Blue pottery received its GI tag in 2009.
Pattachitra: painting as a craft tradition
Pattachitra (from the Sanskrit patta, cloth, and chitra, picture) is a scroll-painting tradition on treated cloth, distinct from the classical court and miniature painting schools (Mughal, Rajput, Pahari) because it is a continuous, temple-linked craft practice rather than a courtly one, and it survives today in two related but separately recognised regional forms. Odisha Pattachitra, centred on the artisan village of Raghurajpur near Puri and practised by the Chitrakar community, is painted on cotton cloth stiffened and prepared with a tamarind-seed paste, with fine, controlled lines, elaborate decorative borders, and themes drawn overwhelmingly from Jagannath temple iconography and Vaishnava mythology; it is a finished, static object, not a performance piece. Odisha Pattachitra received its GI tag in 2008. Bengal Patachitra, practised by the Patua community (traditionally Muslim artisans painting Hindu religious and, increasingly, social themes), uses paper backed with cloth in a long, light scroll format with bolder lines and thicker borders, and is historically tied to a performance tradition: the Patua unrolls the scroll section by section while singing an accompanying narrative song (pater gaan), making the painting and the oral performance a single composite art form. Bengal Patachitra received its own, separate GI tag in 2018, formally distinguishing it from the Odisha tradition despite the shared name and shared root technique.

Handicrafts questions in the Art & Culture section reward the same kind of precision as the rest of the subject: a specific place, a specific technique keyword, and a specific community or patron, tested as a statement to be judged true or false, or as a matching-pairs question pairing a craft with its state or its signature technique. The traps are predictable once you have seen the pattern: swapping the state of origin for a neighbouring one (attributing Bidriware to Hyderabad instead of Bidar, or Pochampally Ikat to Andhra Pradesh instead of Telangana), mixing up which of two closely related crafts a fact belongs to (Chanderi's sheerness attributed to Maheshwari, or Odisha Pattachitra's silence attributed to Bengal Patachitra's performance tradition, and vice versa), and testing whether a candidate actually knows what a named technique word means (ikat as thread-resist versus bandhani as cloth-resist, or lost-wax casting versus inlay work) rather than just recognising the craft's name. The GI mechanism itself is also fair game as a standalone institutional question: what a GI tag actually protects, who it is registered to, its validity period, and which product came first, independent of any single craft's details.
