Temple Architecture Styles of India
Nagara, Dravida and Vesara from first principles, Khajuraho, Thanjavur, Belur, Halebidu and Somnathpur as worked examples, and the Sun Temples of Konark, Modhera and Martand.
Temple architecture is one of Art & Culture's most example-rich chapters, because a temple survives whole and gets photographed, catalogued and dated in a way UPSC turns straight into "identify the style" and "match the site" questions. The vocabulary belongs to structural temples (built up from stone, not excavated from a cliff, the separate cave-architecture tradition), broadly from the Gupta age, 5th century CE, onward. The standard classification, Nagara, Dravida and Vesara, names not a decoration but a whole plan and elevation: tower shape, gateway, and hall arrangement. This note builds that classification from first principles, then anchors it with the named temples UPSC actually tests: Khajuraho and the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple for Nagara, Thanjavur's Brihadeeswara Temple for Dravida, the Hoysala trio of Belur, Halebidu and Somnathpur for Vesara, and three named Sun Temples, Konark, Modhera and Martand. The Nagara style: the North Indian shikhara
Nagara temples, found across North India from Gujarat and Odisha to Madhya Pradesh, are built without an enclosing wall or gateway, generally raised on a plain platform, with a curvilinear tower called the shikhara rising directly over the garbhagriha (sanctum). The shikhara is capped by a ribbed circular disc, the amalaka, and a pot finial, the kalasha. Three named sub-styles are worth pairing with their shape: Rekha-Prasada (or Latina), a simple curving shikhara, the commonest form; Phamsana, a shorter, broader tower rising in flat-roofed tiers rather than curving to a point; and Shekhari/Valabhi, where Shekhari clusters miniature spires around the main tower and Valabhi has a vaulted, barrel-roofed profile borrowed from Buddhist chaitya halls.
Khajuraho's temples (Chandela dynasty, 10th to 11th century) are the standard Nagara worked example, and one temple there is worth knowing in real detail: the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, built under the Chandela king Vidyadhara around 1025 to 1050 CE, dedicated to Shiva. It is the largest and tallest surviving temple at Khajuraho, its plan measuring roughly 31 by 20 metres, with the shikhara itself soaring to about 31 metres. That shikhara is a textbook case of the Shekhari sub-style: the main spire is surrounded by a cluster of 84 miniature subsidiary spires (urushringas), each repeating the profile of the central tower at a smaller scale, a design meant to evoke the many peaks of Mount Kailasha. The temple, along with the rest of the Khajuraho group, is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed there. The Lingaraja Temple at Bhubaneswar, Odisha, dedicated to Harihara (a combined Shiva-Vishnu form), is the other standard Nagara example, and is a useful reminder that the style is not confined to Central India.
The Dravida style: vimana, gopuram, mandapa
Dravida temples, the dominant style of South India, sit inside a rectangular enclosure wall (prakara), entered through a monumental gateway tower, the gopuram, which in later temples grows taller than the sanctum itself. A frequently tested trap: in Dravida temples, vimana names the entire stepped, pyramidal tower over the sanctum, not just its cap, the way "shikhara" is used loosely for the whole tower in the North. The actual small dome-shaped crowning piece atop a Dravida vimana is itself separately called the shikhara. A mandapa, a pillared hall, precedes the sanctum, often multiplied into several linked halls in a large complex.
The Chola-built Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur (built under Rajaraja Chola I, completed around 1010 CE) is the standard fully-developed Dravida example, and its numbers are worth learning precisely rather than in the abstract. Its vimana rises to roughly 66 metres (about 216 feet), among the tallest temple towers anywhere in India, a 16-storeyed granite structure whose lowest three storeys form a square base while the remaining storeys taper upward to give the tower its pyramidal profile. The crowning piece at the very top, the small dome correctly called the shikhara in Dravida terminology, is carved from a single monolithic block of granite estimated at roughly 80 tonnes, raised into place, tradition holds, along a purpose-built earthen ramp several kilometres long, since granite itself is not locally available at Thanjavur and had to be hauled in. The whole structure was built without mortar, its stones cut and interlocked with enough precision that the temple has stood for over a thousand years. Thanjavur's temple is not tested alone: UNESCO's "Great Living Chola Temples" inscription groups it with two later Chola foundations built on the same architectural principles, the Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikondacholapuram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, a grouping worth remembering as a set rather than as three unconnected names.
The Vesara style: the Deccan hybrid
Vesara ("hybrid," or "mule") temples blend Nagara's curving spire with Dravida's storeyed, pyramidal massing, and are associated with the Deccan, first under the Chalukyas of Badami and later Kalyani, and most distinctively under the Hoysalas of Karnataka, 12th to 13th century. Hoysala temples sit on a star-shaped (stellate) platform and are carved from soft soapstone, a material easy to work when freshly quarried and only hardening with age, which let sculptors work at an unusually fine, almost jewellery-like level of detail across walls, pillars and ceilings alike.
Three Hoysala temples anchor this style, and since September 2023 they are tested together as a single UNESCO listing, "Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas," India's 42nd World Heritage Site. The Chennakeshava Temple at Belur was commissioned by the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE, traditionally linked to his victory over the Cholas at the Battle of Talakad the previous year, and construction continued across three generations. The Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebidu, begun around 1121 CE, is a twin shrine, one half named for the king and the other, Shantaleswara, for his queen Shantala Devi, both dedicated to Shiva; its walls carry some of the most celebrated friezes in Indian sculpture, stacked bands of elephants, lions, scrollwork, horses and scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata running the full circuit of the temple. A frequently tested detail: construction at Halebidu ran intermittently for close to 190 years and was never finished, its shikhara was never built, work stopped after repeated invasions in the early 14th century, so the temple as it stands today is genuinely incomplete rather than merely ruined. The Kesava Temple at Somanathapura, built not by the king himself but by his general Somanatha Dandanayaka under the Hoysala king Narasimha III, and completed in 1268 CE, is the latest and most fully finished of the three: a trikuta (three-shrined) plan on a single star-shaped platform, with separate sanctums for Kesava, Janardhana and Venugopala, three forms of Vishnu, arranged around a shared pillared hall. Because it was built in one sustained campaign rather than expanded over generations, Somanathapura is usually described as the most completely realised example of the mature Hoysala plan.
Structural comparison: what actually differs
UPSC's matching questions reward being able to state, in one line each, what genuinely separates the three styles rather than reciting the style descriptions separately. Three structural questions settle it every time:
- What shape is the tower, and what is it called? Nagara has a single curvilinear shikhara rising directly over the sanctum. Dravida has a stepped, storeyed pyramidal vimana, with "shikhara" reserved there only for its small crowning dome. Vesara blends the two: a Dravida-like storeyed massing carrying a more Nagara-like curved profile near the top.
- Is there a boundary wall and gateway? Nagara temples generally have neither, standing more or less freely on their platform. Dravida temples are enclosed by a prakara wall entered through a gopuram, which in later, larger complexes dwarfs the sanctum's own tower. Vesara temples, being Deccan hybrids, typically follow the Nagara pattern of no enclosing wall, the star-shaped platform itself doing the work of marking the temple's boundary.
- How is the plan laid out? All three place the garbhagriha at the centre, but the halls in front of it differ: Nagara temples generally keep the mandapa modest and axially aligned; Dravida temples multiply the mandapa into several large linked halls between the gopuram and the sanctum; Hoysala Vesara temples instead expand the platform itself into a star shape and wrap it with a continuous circumambulatory path, which is what gives their sculpture its unusually large uninterrupted surface to work across.
Vijayanagara temple architecture, in brief
The Vijayanagara Empire (14th to 16th century) built directly on the Dravida tradition but pushed several of its elements, especially the gopuram and the pillared mandapa, to a new scale, most visibly at the Virupaksha and Vitthala temples at Hampi. The Sun Temples: Konark, Modhera and Martand
Three named Sun Temples, all dedicated to Surya, are common UPSC anchors from three different regions and centuries, and are worth learning as a set precisely because they get confused with each other in matching questions.
The Sun Temple at Konark, Odisha, was built under the Eastern Ganga king Narasimhadeva I (reigned 1238 to 1264 CE), construction usually dated to around 1250 CE, and is, per UNESCO, "the culmination of Kalingan temple architecture." It is conceived as Surya's chariot: 24 carved stone wheels, about 3 metres across each, run along its north and south sides, drawn by a team of seven horses. The vimana's crowning shikhara was razed in the 19th century, leaving the pyramidal jagamohana (audience hall) as the tallest surviving structure, with the unroofed natmandir (dance hall) further east. UNESCO's own account also preserves the temple's construction legend: 1,200 artisans over 12 years, under the master builder Bisu Moharana.
The Sun Temple at Modhera, Gujarat, was built under the Solanki king Bhima I (reigned 1022 to 1063 CE) in the Maru-Gurjara style, on a single east-west axis: a stepped tank, the Surya Kunda, leading to a detached pillared hall, the Sabhamandapa, and then the sanctum (garbhagriha), aligned so precisely that sunrise on the equinoxes shines straight through the Sabhamandapa's doors into the shrine.
The Martand Sun Temple, near Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir, is the oldest of the three and the one most often left out of a first read of this chapter. It was built under the Karkota dynasty ruler Lalitaditya Muktapida (reigned roughly 724 to 760 CE), which places it in the 8th century CE, well before either Konark or Modhera. Its plan is distinctive: a large colonnaded courtyard, roughly 220 by 142 feet, ringed by 84 subsidiary shrines, with the main sanctum at its centre, an arrangement art historians read as a fusion of Gandharan, Gupta and Kashmiri building traditions rather than a straightforward regional variant of Nagara. The temple functioned as a major pilgrimage site for several centuries before falling into ruin, traditionally attributed to destruction under Sultan Sikandar Butshikan in the early 15th century, and survives today only as a roofless colonnade and platform. Unlike Konark, it is not a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance, a distinction worth keeping straight in a statement-based question.
Why this shows up in Prelims
UPSC tests this chapter through precise pairings: which style a named temple belongs to, which dynasty and king built it, and the exact meaning of a technical term, especially the vimana-versus-shikhara distinction between South and North India, a well-worn trap. Fix the three-style classification first, Nagara, Dravida and Vesara, and their defining tower shapes, then anchor each with one or two named, dated temples rather than trying to memorise the style descriptions in the abstract. Numbers attached to a named monument, a height, a date, a count of subsidiary shrines or wheels, are exactly the kind of specific detail a statement-based question tends to isolate and test on its own.
