National Sports and Civilian Honours: Purpose and Eligibility

Each national sports award has a distinct, non-overlapping purpose, coaches versus athletes versus corporates versus lifetime service, and the Gandhi Peace Prize jury is five members, the Prime Minister plus the Chief Justice, the Leader of the Opposition and two eminent persons, never the President or the Speaker.

Four sports awards, four genuinely different purposes

UPSC's National Sports Awards questions are trap questions built on one design fact: each award recognises a different kind of contribution, and the traps come from swapping which award goes with which contribution.

  • The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award (renamed from the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in August 2021, after the hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand) is India's highest sporting honour, for outstanding performance across a period of four years, individual in focus even when the athlete plays a team sport.
  • The Arjuna Award recognises consistently outstanding performance by an individual sportsperson, again typically assessed over a four-year window, the award most sportspersons aim for first.
  • The Dronacharya Award, instituted in 1985, goes to coaches, specifically those who have produced medal-winning performances at the international level, not to athletes.
  • The Major Dhyan Chand Award (distinct from the Khel Ratna that now also carries his name) recognises lifetime contribution to sport, for a sportsperson whose competitive career has ended.
  • The Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar, a fixture since 2009, goes to corporate entities and organisations, not individuals, for contributions to sports promotion (talent identification, CSR-driven sports encouragement, employment of sportspersons, sports-for-development work), assessed over the preceding three years.

The trap pattern worth carrying forward: a statement that gives an athlete's award to a coach, a coach's award to a corporate, or an individual honour to an organisation (or the reverse) is testing exactly this non-overlap. Getting the current official name right also matters: a statement still calling it the "Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna" as the award's present name is describing its pre-2021 identity, not its current one.

The Gandhi Peace Prize jury: five members, not the obvious four

The Gandhi Peace Prize, an annual civilian honour recognising contributions to social, economic and political transformation through non-violent means, is decided by a five-member jury chaired by the Prime Minister. Its other members are the Chief Justice of India, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and two other eminent persons. The trap here is substituting a plausible-sounding constitutional office for one of these seats: neither the President of India nor the Speaker of the Lok Sabha sits on this jury, despite both being senior constitutional functionaries whose presence would seem natural. A statement listing the President or the Speaker as a jury member is testing exactly this substitution.

Quick revision points

  • Khel Ratna (now Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, renamed August 2021): highest sporting honour, four-year outstanding performance, individual focus. Arjuna Award: consistently outstanding individual performance. Dronacharya Award (1985): coaches, for producing international medal-winners. Major Dhyan Chand Award: lifetime contribution, career-ended athletes. Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar (since 2009): corporates/organisations, not individuals, for sports-promotion contribution.
  • Gandhi Peace Prize jury: five members, the Prime Minister (chair), the Chief Justice of India, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, and two eminent persons. Not the President of India, not the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
