The Three Gorges Dam is the world's single largest power plant of any kind, yet coal, not hydropower, still generates the largest share of the world's electricity.
Electricity geography sorts into two related questions worth keeping separate: which single power plants are the largest in raw generating capacity, and which fuel source actually generates the largest share of the world's electricity overall. The two answers do not point to the same technology.
The world's largest power plants are hydroelectric
China's Three Gorges Dam, on the Yangtze River, is the single largest power station of any kind on Earth by installed generating capacity, at 22,500 megawatts. It held that title by overtaking the Itaipu Dam, on the Parana River on the Brazil-Paraguay border, whose own capacity of 14,000 megawatts had made it the world's largest for nearly two decades before Three Gorges was completed; notably, because the Yangtze's own seasonal flow varies enough to limit Three Gorges' output for part of the year, the two dams generate roughly comparable total electricity over a full year even though Three Gorges' peak capacity is considerably higher. More broadly, nine of the world's largest individual operating power plants are hydroelectric facilities, not thermal or nuclear ones, since a single large dam concentrates far more generating capacity in one site than a comparably sized fossil-fuel or nuclear plant typically does.
Coal still generates the world's largest single share of electricity
Despite hydropower's individual mega-projects, coal remains the largest single source of the world's electricity overall, supplying close to a third of global generation, with nuclear power contributing a further roughly one-tenth, a smaller but comparatively stable, low-carbon share of the mix. Coal's continued dominance is concentrated heavily in a handful of large, coal-reliant economies: it is the leading electricity source in China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia alike, which matters disproportionately for the world total given the sheer scale of Chinese and Indian electricity demand. By contrast, the electricity mix varies sharply by country depending on domestic resource endowment and policy choice: in the United States, natural gas leads at around two-fifths of generation, with coal, nuclear and renewables each supplying a further one-fifth or so; the European Union's own two largest sources are nuclear and wind, both low-carbon, with gas and coal well down the list, a direct reflection of the bloc's own decades-long push toward decarbonising its power sector.
China, the United States, Russia and India together dominate world electricity production and consumption by sheer scale of economy and population, across every generation source from fossil fuels to nuclear to renewables, which is worth holding as the standing backdrop against which any individual country's generation mix should be read.
