World Fishing Grounds and Fisheries
Why the world's richest fishing grounds sit on cold-water continental shelves and current junctions, not warm tropical seas, and how aquaculture overtook wild catch entirely.
The world's richest fishing grounds are not, on the whole, the warmest seas, and the physical reason why is the exam-relevant core of this chapter. A commercially rich fishery needs two things together: a shallow continental shelf, so sunlight reaches the sea floor and supports the plankton that the whole food chain depends on, and cold, nutrient-rich water, either because a cold ocean current runs through the area or because cold and warm currents meet and mix there, stirring nutrients up from the deeper, colder layer toward the surface. Warm tropical open ocean, by contrast, tends to be nutrient-poor precisely because it is not stirred this way, which is why the world's great named fishing grounds cluster overwhelmingly in the cold and cool-temperate latitudes rather than the tropics.
The world's named fishing grounds
The North-West Atlantic, historically centred on the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, was once among the richest single fishing grounds on Earth, sitting exactly on the shallow continental shelf where the cold, southward-flowing Labrador Current meets the warm, northward-flowing Gulf Stream. Its cod stocks collapsed from decades of overfishing, leading Canada to impose an indefinite moratorium on cod fishing there in 1992, and the Grand Banks is consequently now the standard named example UPSC could use for overfishing and fishery collapse rather than for present-day abundance. The North-East Atlantic, around the North Sea and the Dogger Bank, is Europe's own equivalent, a shallow shelf sea where similarly favourable current and depth conditions historically supported one of the world's most productive herring and cod fisheries.
The North-West Pacific, off the coasts of Japan, the Korean peninsula and the Russian Far East, is where the cold Oyashio Current meets the warm Kuroshio Current, producing conditions closely comparable to the Grand Banks and supporting Japan's own historically enormous fishing industry. Off South America's west coast, the cold, north-flowing Humboldt (Peru) Current drives one of the most productive single fisheries in the world, the Peruvian anchoveta (anchovy) fishery, whose catch volume in a good year has at times exceeded that of entire other countries' whole fishing industries combined, though it is also famously vulnerable to the periodic warming of an El Nino event, which suppresses the cold current's usual upwelling and can collapse the anchoveta catch for a season or more.
Leading fishing nations today
By total seafood output today, combining wild catch and farmed production, China leads the world by a wide margin, supplying over a third of global volume, with India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Peru among the next largest. On wild, capture-only fisheries specifically, the ranking shifts a little: China still leads, followed by Indonesia, India, Peru (its ranking driven overwhelmingly by the anchoveta fishery just described) and Russia.
Aquaculture has overtaken wild catch
The single most significant recent shift in world fishing geography is not about any named fishing ground at all: the FAO's own 2024 assessment confirmed that global aquaculture (fish and shellfish farming) production has now overtaken wild capture fisheries worldwide for the first time, a genuine structural change in how the world's seafood supply is produced rather than a temporary blip. China, again, leads world aquaculture output by a wide margin, and together with Indonesia, India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, the Philippines, South Korea, Norway, Egypt and Chile, these ten countries account for close to nine-tenths of the world's farmed aquatic production. Norway's presence on this list is worth noting specifically, since it reflects large-scale farmed salmon production in its own fjords rather than the freshwater carp and shrimp farming that dominates most of the Asian entries on the same list.
