India's Population: Distribution, Density, Growth and Composition
382 persons per square kilometre nationally hides a 22-fold gap: Bihar's density against Arunachal Pradesh's, and why the demographic dividend window has an actual closing date.

This note applies the same lens specifically to India, using Census 2011, still the country's last completed census, as its baseline, since the 2021 exercise was postponed and has not yet been conducted.
Distribution and density: a genuinely uneven country
India's population, at just over 1.21 billion in 2011 (623.7 million male, 586.5 million female), works out to a national average density of 382 persons per square kilometre, itself already dense by world standards, but that national figure conceals extreme internal variation. Bihar is the most densely populated of India's major states, its Gangetic-plain agriculture and long settlement history supporting very high rural density even without heavy urbanisation. Arunachal Pradesh, at the opposite extreme, has the lowest density of any Indian state, just 17 persons per square kilometre, a direct result of its rugged Himalayan terrain and extensive forest cover (over three-fifths of its land area) rather than a small population as such. Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state outright by sheer headcount, accounting for well over a sixth of the country's total population, while Sikkim is the least populous state of all. This pattern, dense agricultural plains and coastal lowlands against thinly settled mountain and forest states, mirrors at India's own scale the same physical and economic factors (climate, relief, soil, historical settlement, industrialisation) that explain world population distribution generally.
Growth, sex ratio and literacy
India's population growth rate has been decelerating for several decades, the country's own version of the demographic transition already tracked worldwide, with death rates having fallen well ahead of birth rates and the gap between the two now narrowing as fertility itself declines. The sex ratio, defined as the number of females per 1,000 males, stood at 940 in the 2011 Census, with the child sex ratio (ages 0 to 6) markedly lower still at 914, a gap that is itself a widely tracked indicator of continuing sex-selective practices before and shortly after birth rather than of natural demographic variation. Literacy, defined by Census convention as the ability to read and write with understanding in any language, stood at 74.04 percent nationally in 2011, a substantial rise from 64.83 percent in 2001, with a persistent gap between male literacy (82.14 percent) and female literacy (65.46 percent) that itself remains a standard tracked indicator of gender disparity in access to education.
Age composition and the demographic dividend
India's population is structured overwhelmingly young relative to most developed economies, with a large working-age share (conventionally 15 to 64 years) relative to the dependent population of children and the elderly on either side. This favourable ratio, a large working-age cohort supporting relatively fewer dependents, is what economists and demographers call the demographic dividend, a window of opportunity in which a country can, in principle, grow faster because a larger share of its population is economically productive rather than dependent. India's own demographic dividend window is generally dated from around 2020 to roughly 2050, since the working-age share is expected to peak and then begin declining as the population as a whole ages, the same trajectory that has already played out, and closed, in countries like Japan and much of Western Europe. The dividend is explicitly a window of opportunity rather than an automatic economic benefit: realising it in practice depends on generating enough productive employment, education and skill development for that large working-age cohort, without which the same demographic structure becomes a burden rather than an advantage once the window closes.
