Nebulae: where stars are born, not where they end

A nebula is an interstellar cloud of gas and dust, made mostly of hydrogen and helium, and it is the raw material from which new stars form when a sufficiently dense region collapses under gravity. This definition, nebula equals star birthplace, is the fact a past pair-matching question tested directly, by pairing "Cepheids" with the nebula definition and "Nebulae" with a variable-star definition, precisely swapped from their correct pairing.

Cepheids: stars whose brightness is a built-in ruler

A Cepheid is a type of variable star whose brightness rises and falls in a regular, predictable, periodic pattern. That periodicity is not just a curiosity; it has a direct, well-established mathematical relationship to the star's true intrinsic brightness. Because astronomers can measure a Cepheid's period from Earth and, from that, calculate how bright it truly is, comparing that to how bright it actually appears in the sky tells them precisely how far away it is. This is why Cepheids are described as "standard candles": a known, reliable reference point used to measure genuinely enormous astronomical distances, including distances between entire galaxies.

Black holes and the associated vocabulary

A black hole forms from the collapsed core of a sufficiently massive dying star, and it carries a specific vocabulary that a question on "which field of science these terms belong to" has tested directly: the event horizon, the boundary beyond which nothing, including light, can escape; and the singularity, the theoretical point at the very centre where the known laws of physics break down. Both terms belong specifically to the general theory of relativity and black hole physics, and correctly locating this vocabulary in astrophysics rather than in an unrelated field of physics is precisely what such a question tests.
