Kavach: automatic, not just advisory

Kavach is India's indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, adopted in July 2020 as the National ATP System for Indian Railways. The word "automatic" is the fact everything else about Kavach depends on. Kavach does not merely alert a loco pilot to a dangerous situation and leave the response to them; it monitors train speed and signal status continuously, and if the pilot fails to slow down or stop when required, Kavach applies the brakes itself, automatically.

This is precisely why Kavach protects against the specific failure modes it is designed for: Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), where a train passes a stop signal it should have obeyed, over-speeding, and collisions, whether head-on, rear-end, or side-on. Each of these is fundamentally a case of a train continuing to move when it should have stopped or slowed, which is exactly the situation Kavach's automatic braking intervenes in. Kavach also assists running in dense fog and other conditions of poor visibility, where a human driver's own judgement is most compromised.

Certification and the pace of rollout

Kavach is certified to Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL-4), the highest tier of safety certification for this class of system, reflecting an extremely low tolerance for failure given what the system is trusted to do automatically. The system has continued to be upgraded, with Kavach Version 4.0 approved by the Research Design and Standards Organisation in July 2024.

Deployment has been substantial: Kavach has been implemented across more than 2,200 route kilometres, with a finalised plan to equip 10,000 locomotives, and tender processes covering roughly 15,000 additional route kilometres of trackside infrastructure already invited. The measurable safety outcome is a sharp decline in consequential train accidents, from 135 in 2014-15 to 31 in 2024-25, though this reflects the broader railway safety programme Kavach sits within, not Kavach's rollout in isolation, since Kavach coverage remains a fraction of the total network.
