Augmented reality adds; virtual reality replaces

Augmented Reality (AR) overlays digital images and information onto the real world that the user can still see around them, through a phone screen or a headset's transparent display. A navigation app's directions painted onto a live camera view of the street is AR: the real world stays fully visible, with a digital layer added on top.

Virtual Reality (VR) replaces the user's entire field of view with a fully digital, computer-generated environment, blocking out the real surroundings completely. A question comparing the two is almost always testing this one reversal: AR adds to reality, VR replaces it. Getting the direction of that sentence backwards, saying AR replaces or VR overlays, is the standard trap.

Web 3.0: a vision more than a fixed technology

Web 3.0 describes a proposed next phase of the internet built around users holding greater control over their own personal data, generally through decentralised technologies such as blockchain, rather than that data being held and monetised by a small number of centralised platforms as in the current, "Web 2.0" internet.

Two things worth being precise about. First, Web 3.0 does not require every existing social or web platform to be rebuilt on blockchain technology from scratch; it is better understood as a direction of travel and a set of design principles than as a single mandatory architecture. Second, because it names a vision rather than one finished specification, "Web 3.0" is used inconsistently across sources, which is exactly why an exam question on it tends to test the underlying principle, user control over data through decentralisation, rather than any single fixed technical definition.

The Metaverse: a specific, testable definition

Unlike Web 3.0, "Metaverse" does have a fairly standard working definition worth learning precisely, because a past question was built directly around parsing it. The Metaverse is an interoperable network of persistent, real-time rendered 3D virtual worlds that can be experienced synchronously by potentially millions of users, who can hold recognised property rights over virtual items and assets within it.

Breaking that down by its individual words is the useful exercise. Persistent means the virtual world continues to exist and evolve even when a particular user is not logged in, unlike a single video game session that ends when you quit. Interoperable means, at least in the fuller vision of the concept, that a virtual asset or identity could move between different platforms rather than being locked permanently inside one company's application. Synchronous means many users experience and affect the same virtual space at the same time, rather than each having a private, separate copy of it. And the property-rights element is why blockchain and NFTs, covered in the neighbouring chapter on this site, are so frequently discussed alongside Metaverse concepts: they are one proposed mechanism for making a claim of ownership over a purely virtual asset verifiable and transferable.
