  1. The paper people underrate

    CSAT at a glance

    CSAT, Paper 2, has been qualifying only since 2015, it never adds to your merit rank. That single fact makes candidates treat it as an afterthought, which is exactly what turns it into a real elimination risk.

    Marks per question

    2.5, unlike GS Paper 1's 2. 80 questions, 200 marks total.

    Negative marking

    One third of that question's marks deducted for a wrong answer, same fraction as GS Paper 1.

    Time

    2 hours, so under 1.5 minutes a question on average, though comprehension passages eat far more than that.

    Language

    Available in English and Hindi, except the English-comprehension questions themselves.

    Miss 66/200 and nothing else matters. A brilliant GS Paper 1 score does not offset a failed CSAT, the two are graded and cleared entirely independently.

    UPSC's own syllabus names seven areas. Comprehension and basic numeracy carry the most weight in most real papers.

    Honest gap: our 80-question CSAT bank has real coverage in comprehension, basic numeracy, logical reasoning, and general mental ability. Decision making, interpersonal skills, and data interpretation have no questions here yet, named plainly rather than left implicit.

  3. What changed

    Why it has gotten harder since 2023

    Comprehension passages have gotten noticeably longer and denser since 2023, enough that candidates who cleared CSAT comfortably in earlier attempts have been caught out.

    Do not extrapolate from an older sibling's or a senior's experience. "I cleared CSAT easily in 2019" is no longer a reliable signal for what today's paper looks like.

    Answering strategy

    Decision making has no negative marking

    Confirmed from UPSC's own marking scheme. Attempt every one of these, even an uncertain guess costs nothing.

    Numeracy is the real elimination risk

    For a non-quantitative background, this section (not comprehension) is what most often causes a genuine fail, not just a low score.

    Comprehension rewards speed, not depth

    Skim for the question first, then hunt the passage for the answer, rather than reading start to finish.

    GS Paper 1 does not save you

    CSAT is qualifying only, but a 65/200 there disqualifies you from the merit list regardless of a strong GS Paper 1 score.

    The single highest-leverage habit: attempt every decision-making question. It is the one place in the entire Prelims exam where a guess is genuinely free.

Frequently asked questions

How many marks do I need to qualify CSAT?

33 percent, 66 out of 200 marks. There is no partial credit for a strong GS Paper 1 score, CSAT is graded entirely on its own, and missing 66 disqualifies you from the merit list regardless of how well GS Paper 1 went.

Is CSAT really easier than people say, since it only needs 33 percent?

The threshold is low, but comprehension passages have gotten noticeably longer and denser since 2023, catching out candidates who treat CSAT as an afterthought. A 33 percent qualifying bar is not the same as an easy paper, especially for a non-quantitative background.

Does decision making really have no negative marking?

Yes, confirmed. Every other CSAT section loses one third of that question's marks for a wrong answer, but decision-making questions do not, UPSC's stated reason is that a single most-appropriate answer is harder to define there. Attempt every decision-making question.

How many marks per question does CSAT carry?

2.5 marks per question, not 2. 80 questions at 2.5 marks each is the 200-mark total, a different per-question value from GS Paper 1's 100 questions at 2 marks each, also 200 marks total. Easy to mix up since both papers total 200.
