S&P affirms India's sovereign rating amid a fiscal slippage warning, UPI marks ten years of explosive growth, and Karnataka pushes back on the Kasturirangan report.
S&P affirms India's 'BBB' sovereign rating, flags fiscal slippage risk for FY27
S&P Global Ratings on 27 August 2026 affirmed India's long term sovereign credit rating at 'BBB' with a stable outlook, about a year after upgrading India from 'BBB minus' to 'BBB' in August 2025, its first upgrade since 2007. The agency projected economic growth of around 6.6 per cent for the current financial year but flagged the risk of slippage in the Centre's fiscal deficit target for 2026 to 27, which is budgeted at 4.3 per cent of GDP. S&P said continued fiscal consolidation would be a key factor in any future upgrade to India's rating.
UPI completes 10 years, transaction volume up nearly 13,000 fold
The Unified Payments Interface, launched by the National Payments Corporation of India on 25 August 2016, completed 10 years this week. The Union Finance Ministry said UPI's annual transaction volume rose from 1.78 crore in 2016 to 17 to more than 24,162 crore in 2025 to 26, a nearly 13,000 fold increase, while transaction value rose from about 0.07 lakh crore rupees to approximately 314 lakh crore rupees over the same period, a more than 4,000 fold rise. UPI is now operational in 11 countries, and the International Monetary Fund has recognised it as the world's largest real time payment system by transaction volume.
HAL and Safran sign contract to jointly develop 'Aravalli' helicopter engine
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Safran Helicopter Engines signed a contract on 26 August 2026, through their fifty-fifty joint venture SAFHAL Helicopter Engines, to jointly design, develop and manufacture a new generation high power helicopter engine named 'Aravalli'. The engine, in the 3,500 to 4,000 shaft horsepower class, will power India's upcoming 13 tonne Indian Multi-Role Helicopter and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter, with manufacturing planned at a facility in Tumakuru, Karnataka. Design and development is expected to be completed by 2032 to 33, and the programme marks the first time a high power helicopter engine has been designed and developed in India rather than assembled under licence.
Karnataka to call special legislature session against Kasturirangan report notification
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on 26 August 2026 announced that the state would call a special session of the legislature to discuss the Centre's draft notification implementing the Kasturirangan committee report on ecologically sensitive areas in the Western Ghats, and to pass a resolution opposing it. He said the draft would affect livelihood and farming activity in 1,449 villages across 33 taluks and 10 districts, spanning about 20,668 square kilometres, and imposes conditions on infrastructure, mining, power, construction, tourism and road development in the area. Shivakumar noted that the state Cabinet had already rejected the Kasturirangan report in September 2024, but that the Centre had now notified the draft unilaterally.
PM Modi addresses nationwide 'Khelo India Dialogue' ahead of National Sports Day
The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports organised 'Khelo India Dialogue, Khel Ki Baat PM Ke Saath' on 27 August 2026, two days ahead of National Sports Day, bringing together young people, athletes and educational institutions at more than 1,500 locations across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed participants by video conferencing, structuring his remarks around five themes: sport, Olympic aspirations, youth leadership, a developed India, and a drug free youth. The programme, organised by Mera Yuva Bharat, aimed to give young people a direct channel to share ideas on India's sporting and youth ecosystem.
