India and Canada reiterate commitment to conclude trade deal by end of 2026
Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Canadian Minister of Finance and National Revenue Francois Philippe Champagne issued a joint statement on Friday (28 August 2026) reiterating both countries' commitment to conclude the India Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of 2026. The statement, issued after the inaugural India Canada Finance Ministers' Economic and Financial Dialogue in Toronto, said India had expressed readiness to begin negotiations on a Bilateral Investment Treaty at the earliest. The dialogue built on the commitment made by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting in New Delhi in March 2026 to strengthen bilateral economic and financial cooperation.
India signs agreement with United States for Javelin anti-tank missile system
India and the United States signed an agreement on Friday (28 August 2026) for the procurement of the Javelin anti-tank guided missile system through the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route, the US Embassy in New Delhi said. The Javelin is a medium range, fire and forget anti-tank guided missile that can be operated by a single soldier and is designed to engage armoured vehicles and fortified positions. The US Embassy said the agreement demonstrated the growing depth of the US India Major Defence Partnership and opened the way for greater cooperation between the two countries and their defence industries, with Bharat Dynamics Limited having earlier signed an agreement with the Javelin Joint Venture to explore future co-production in India.
320 Indians remain uncontactable as Nepal flood death toll rises, India steps up relief effort
At least 320 Indian nationals remained 'uncontactable' following the flash floods that struck Nepal on 26 August 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday (28 August 2026), as the death toll in Nepal continued to rise. The MEA said 84 Indian nationals had been rescued so far, including 21 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu and 63 workers from the Trishuli I hydropower project, while around 400 others remained stranded on the Chinese side of the border. India has sent about 60 tonnes of relief material in three planeloads along with a tunnel rescue team, a medical team, additional Bailey bridges and technical teams, and is coordinating with the Nepali and Chinese authorities to trace and evacuate its citizens.
PM Modi begins four day visit to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a four day visit to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan on Saturday (29 August 2026). He will hold a State Visit to Tashkent from 29 to 30 August, his fourth visit to Uzbekistan, for delegation level talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on trade, investment, defence, critical minerals, energy and connectivity, before travelling to Bishkek to attend the 26th Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation from 31 August to 1 September at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov. India and Uzbekistan elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership in 2011, and the Ministry of External Affairs said a bilateral meeting between the leaders of India and Russia was also expected on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Bishkek.
Assam's Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation completes 25 years
The Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) at Panbari, near Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam, entered its 25th year of operation on Friday (28 August 2026), having been established on 28 August 2002 as India's first dedicated facility for hand raising, treating and rehabilitating orphaned and injured wild animals before their release into natural habitats. Jointly run by the Assam Forest Department and the Wildlife Trust of India in partnership with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, CWRC has responded to more than 10,000 wildlife rescue cases over 25 years, with nearly 68 per cent of treated animals successfully released back into the wild. The centre has also contributed to conservation programmes including the reintroduction of rhinos into Manas National Park and the rehabilitation of Asiatic black bear cubs and rescued wild buffalo.
India and Kuwait hold inaugural Joint Defence Committee meeting
India and Kuwait held the inaugural meeting of their Joint Defence Committee (JDC) in New Delhi on Friday (28 August 2026), co-chaired by Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad and Brigadier General Raed Alsakran leading a five member Kuwaiti delegation. The two sides agreed to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation across training, military exercises, military medicine, staff talks, defence industry and research and development. The meeting operationalised the Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation signed between India and Kuwait during the Prime Minister's visit to Kuwait in December 2024, with the Indian delegation drawing representatives from the three services, the Department of Defence Production, the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Armed Forces Medical Services and the Ministry of External Affairs.
India's foreign exchange reserves rise to record USD 729.3 billion
India's foreign exchange reserves rose by USD 12.42 billion to a record USD 729.3 billion in the week ended 21 August 2026, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India on Friday (28 August 2026). The Reserve Bank attributed the sharp rise to strong inflows under its concessional FCNR(B) swap window, due to close on 31 August 2026, and to revaluation gains, with foreign currency assets alone increasing by USD 9.48 billion during the week. The milestone comes weeks after reserves first crossed USD 707 billion, reflecting the continued build up of India's external buffers even as the rupee has faced pressure through the year.
NGT issues notice to Centre over dilution of 'construction free zone' status for Ganga floodplains
The National Green Tribunal's Principal Bench, comprising Chairperson Justice Prakash Srivastava and Expert Member Afroz Ahmed, issued notices on 25 August 2026 to the central government and other respondents over a notification that amends the definition of Ganga floodplains. The Union Ministry of Jal Shakti's notification of 7 August 2026 amends the River Ganga (Rejuvenation, Protection and Management) Authority Order, 2016, replacing the earlier blanket mandate that floodplains 'shall be construction free zone' with a formula requiring them to be maintained only 'to reduce pollution sources' and preserve groundwater recharge functions, while also introducing a graded definition of active, regulatory and warning floodplain zones based on one in five, twenty five and hundred year flood return periods. The tribunal has not stayed the notification, which remains in force, and has listed the matter for its next hearing on 27 October 2026.
SEBI bars Trafiksol ITS Technologies and its promoters from securities market for a year
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Friday (28 August 2026) barred Trafiksol ITS Technologies Limited and its promoters, Jitendra Narayan Das and Poonam Das, from accessing the securities market for one year and imposed penalties totalling Rs 1.05 crore, with Trafiksol fined Rs 30 lakh, Jitendra Das Rs 50 lakh and Poonam Das Rs 25 lakh. SEBI's investigation found that Trafiksol had inflated its 2023 to 24 revenue by Rs 22.01 crore through transactions routed via related entities, and identified fictitious purchases worth Rs 8.95 crore, in connection with the company's proposed Rs 44.87 crore SME initial public offering. The regulator directed the company and its promoters to pay the penalties within 45 days.
