Bihar deploys 33 NDRF and SDRF teams as Ganga, Gandak and other rivers cross danger mark
The Bihar government deployed 33 teams of the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force, comprising six NDRF and 27 SDRF teams, in flood sensitive districts on 5 September 2026 as water levels in several major rivers rose sharply. The Ganga was flowing above the danger mark at Digha and Gandhi Ghat in Patna, as well as at Bhagalpur, Kahalgaon, Buxar and Munger, while the Gandak, Kosi, Budhi Gandak, Punpun and Ghaghra rivers also crossed danger levels at various points. The state deployed 693 boats to support movement and evacuation, and district administrations set up relief camps and community kitchens for affected residents.
MEA says 275 Indians remain missing in Nepal floods, 166 rescued so far
India's Ministry of External Affairs said on 5 September 2026 that 275 Indian nationals remained missing and 166 others had been rescued following the flash floods that struck the Nepal Tibet border on 26 August, while 1,907 Indian nationals had safely crossed over from Tibet into Nepal. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India has supplied around 95 tonnes of relief material and sent 54 personnel, including 30 tunnel rescue experts, 19 forensic experts and a five member medical team, to support relief and rescue efforts in Nepal. Nepal's overall death toll from the floods has risen to at least 1,295, with roughly 5,000 people still reported missing.
India and China to hold Corps Commander level talks in Northeast, days after Doval-Wang Beijing meeting
India and China are set to hold Corps Commander level talks in the coming days amid reported tension in the Taksing area of Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Subansiri district, days after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held special representative talks in Beijing on 25 August 2026. Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, commander of the Army's III Corps, known as the Spear Corps and headquartered at Rangapahar near Dimapur in Nagaland, is responsible for operations in Nagaland, Manipur and the central and eastern sectors of Arunachal Pradesh, and will hold talks with his Chinese counterpart. The two sides have also agreed on two new military hotlines likely to link Army command headquarters in Kolkata and Lucknow with their Chinese counterparts, and a new Border Personnel Meeting point at Joshimath in Uttarakhand.
Marco Rubio visit likely in October, Quad summit on G20 margins in US being explored
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is likely to visit India in October 2026, while officials from India, the United States, Japan and Australia are exploring a possible Quad leaders' summit on the margins of the G20 summit in December, The Indian Express reported on 5 September 2026. The G20 summit, held under the US presidency, is scheduled for 14 and 15 December 2026 at the Trump National Doral Miami in Doral, Florida. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri hosted a meeting of Quad Sherpas in New Delhi on 4 September 2026, which reviewed progress on maritime and transnational security, economic prosperity, critical and emerging technologies, and humanitarian assistance cooperation. India was originally due to host the Quad summit, but plans shifted after ties with Washington were strained by tariffs and by President Trump's claims of mediating between India and Pakistan.
CBI raids 89 locations across 20 states in digital arrest crackdown, Operation Chakra VI
The Central Bureau of Investigation carried out coordinated searches at 89 locations across 20 states on 4 September 2026 under Operation Chakra VI, its sixth nationwide crackdown against digital arrest syndicates, arresting three people accused of laundering the proceeds of the fraud. The searches related to three cases with a combined alleged loss of about Rs 42.36 crore, including one from Karnataka in which a victim was kept under digital arrest for a month and defrauded of Rs 15.45 crore. In a digital arrest scam, fraudsters posing as police officers or other law enforcement officials keep a victim under sustained psychological coercion over a video call, often forbidding contact with family, while extracting money described as bail, verification deposits or asset audits.
Department of Biotechnology launches BIO-NIVESH platform to connect biotech startups with investors
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh launched BIO-NIVESH on 3 September 2026, a platform designed to strengthen engagement between biotechnology innovators and private investors and catalyse the flow of private capital into biotechnology innovations for scale up and commercialisation. The platform functions under the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, or BIRAC, which has been designated a Second Level Fund Manager for biotechnology under the Rs 1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation Fund. The inaugural edition brought together 20 biotechnology and deep tech startups with around 50 investors, and the government plans to hold subsequent editions across other cities.
