  National Security Advisor Ajit Doval arrived in Beijing on Monday (24 August 2026) for the 25th round of talks between the Special Representatives (SRs) of India and China on the boundary question, meeting his counterpart, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on Tuesday (25 August 2026). The Special Representatives mechanism was established in 2003 as the main channel for negotiations on the boundary question and for wider communication between the two countries. The visit comes ahead of a possible visit to India by Chinese President Xi Jinping next month for the BRICS Summit that India is hosting on 12 September 2026, and follows an August 6 meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) that reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control.

  India and China agree to continue seeking a political settlement of the boundary question

  National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Special Representatives of their countries on the boundary question, held the 25th round of talks in Beijing on 25 August 2026. The Ministry of External Affairs said the two sides agreed to continue their work in seeking a political settlement of the boundary question in the context of their overall and long term interests, and noted the progress made in implementing the consensus reached between the two leaders in Kazan in October 2024 and Tianjin in August 2025. Both sides expressed satisfaction at the steady resumption of people to people and cross border exchanges, including the ongoing Kailash Manasarovar Yatra and border trade through the three designated trading passes. Before meeting Wang Yi, Doval also met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, with both sides discussing ways to strengthen peace and tranquillity in the border areas. The talks come ahead of a possible visit to India by President Xi Jinping next month for the BRICS Summit.

  India and China agree on new military hotlines and boundary delimitation groups

  India and China released an eight point outcome document on 26 August 2026, a day after the 25th round of Special Representatives talks between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. The Expert Group on Boundary Delimitation and a Working Group on Border Management, both under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on border affairs, will advance discussions on an Early and Substantial Harvest of boundary delimitation and border management, with their first task being to agree on their respective terms of reference. The two sides also agreed on two additional meeting points for General Level or Senior Highest Military Commander talks and two additional border military hotlines in the Eastern and Middle Sectors, underlined their commitment to a boundary settlement framework in accordance with the 2005 Agreement on Political Parameters and Guiding Principles, and agreed to hold the next meeting of an expert level mechanism on trans-border rivers in September.

  India and China are set to hold Corps Commander level talks in the coming days amid reported tension in the Taksing area of Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Subansiri district, days after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held special representative talks in Beijing on 25 August 2026. Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, commander of the Army's III Corps, known as the Spear Corps and headquartered at Rangapahar near Dimapur in Nagaland, is responsible for operations in Nagaland, Manipur and the central and eastern sectors of Arunachal Pradesh, and will hold talks with his Chinese counterpart. The two sides have also agreed on two new military hotlines likely to link Army command headquarters in Kolkata and Lucknow with their Chinese counterparts, and a new Border Personnel Meeting point at Joshimath in Uttarakhand.

  India and China held their first-ever Corps Commander-level talks in Arunachal Pradesh on 6 September 2026, at the Wacha-Damai border meeting point near Kibithu on the Line of Actual Control, amid reports of a troop build-up and tensions in the Taksing area of Upper Subansiri district. The Indian delegation was led by Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, commander of the Army's 3 Corps. The meeting followed talks between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on 26 August, at which it was decided to set up two additional Corps Commander-level meeting points, in the eastern and middle sectors, besides the existing Ladakh-centred mechanism, along with two additional border military hotlines.
