Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired the 28th meeting of the Western Zonal Council in Panaji on 7 September 2026, attended by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Administrator of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Praful K Patel, who together make up the Council's membership. He said 25 meetings of the Zonal Councils and their standing committees were held between 2004 and 2014 against 71 since 2014, and that of 1,893 issues taken up in them, 1,445 have been resolved, with the Inter State Council Secretariat playing an active role. Shah said the Councils have become an instrument for monitoring the implementation of public welfare schemes rather than for dispute resolution. The agenda included Fast Track Special Courts, the Emergency Response Support System, food safety standards, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, rural banking access, railway projects and environmental clearances.
