The feed that decides which news reaches a reader is built by a company that earns from the time the reader spends on it. Its ranking is tuned to what holds attention, and outrage holds attention better than qualification does. Nothing in that arrangement is dishonest; it simply answers a different question from the one a newsroom asks. An editor decides what a reader ought to know, and is answerable when the answer is wrong. A ranking system decides what a reader will not scroll past, and is answerable to whether the reader stayed.
