UPSC Prelims 2024 · CSAT (Paper 2) · Q14
Medium · Passage: validity of assumptions
Read the following passage and answer the item that follows. Your answer to this item should be based on the passage only.
On a large online marketplace, the first screen of results decides most of what is bought, and a seller who does not appear there may as well not be listed. Placement on that screen is not settled by product quality alone. It reflects paid promotion, past sales volume and the platform's own private label, all of which favour sellers who are already large or who can afford to bid. A small manufacturer with a better product but no budget for promotion competes for the attention that is left over after those claims are met.
Based on the above passage, the following assumptions have been made:
1. Where a product appears in search results depends on more than the quality of the product itself.
2. Sellers who cannot pay for promotion may be placed at a disadvantage on such a marketplace.
Which of the assumptions given above is/are valid?
