Medium · Passage: practical message conveyed

Read the following passage and answer the item that follows. Your answer to this item should be based on the passage only.

A maize plant being eaten by a caterpillar does not merely suffer. Within hours it releases a blend of volatile compounds from the damaged leaves, and the blend is specific enough that parasitic wasps hunting that particular caterpillar can find the plant by scent alone. The wasps lay their eggs in the caterpillar, and the plant is relieved of it. The signal is produced only when the damage is caused by chewing, not when a leaf is merely torn, which suggests the plant is responding to something in the insect's saliva.

Which one of the following statements best reflects the most logical, rational and practical message conveyed by the passage?
