Lakes and Waterfalls of India

How India's lakes formed, tectonic, glacial, oxbow, crater and lagoon, and the named waterfalls UPSC tests, sorted by river, state and defining feature.

UPSC rarely asks a Prelims question that just names a lake or a waterfall. It asks how many of a listed set are correctly matched to their state, their river, or their type of origin, which only works if the actual mechanism behind each one, not just its name, is on recall. A saline lake and a freshwater lake sitting a few hundred kilometres apart can have completely different origins; a "crater lake" in a state full of ancient volcanic rock is often not volcanic at all; and the "highest waterfall in India" is a title that genuinely depends on which definition of height is being used. This note works through both halves of that trap: the genetic classes lakes actually fall into, with the named examples UPSC draws from, and the major waterfalls tested by river, state and distinguishing feature.

How a Lake Forms: A Genetic Classification

Geographers sort lakes by origin, not by size or salinity, because origin is what actually explains a lake's shape, its water chemistry and whether it holds water year-round. Six genetic classes cover almost every lake UPSC has ever tested:

  • Tectonic lakes occupy a basin created by movement of the earth's crust, faulting, warping, or the subsidence of a block between faults, rather than by any surface process like erosion or deposition. Wular and Sambhar, both covered below, are India's two textbook cases.
  • Glacial lakes form in basins a glacier itself carved out (a cirque, scooped into a mountainside) or dammed with its own debris (a moraine wall blocking a valley). They cluster at high altitude in the Himalaya, fed directly by snowmelt and glacier melt.
  • Oxbow lakes are cut off from a river's main channel when a meander loop is abandoned, common wherever a mature river winds across a flat floodplain, which in India means the middle and lower Ganga plain above all.
  • Crater lakes occupy a roughly circular depression blasted or collapsed into the ground, either by volcanic activity or by a meteorite strike. India's only well-known example, Lonar, is the second kind, not the first, a genuine and frequently tested distinction.
  • Lagoon or coastal lakes form where a sandbar or barrier island seals off a stretch of shallow sea from the open coast, leaving a body of water that is typically brackish (part salt, part fresh) rather than purely marine or purely freshwater.
  • Artificial lakes are reservoirs created by damming a river for irrigation, power or water supply; they are lakes by every functional measure but owe their existence to engineering, not geomorphology.

Tectonic Lakes: Wular and Sambhar

Wular Lake, in Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir, is India's largest freshwater lake and the second largest in Asia. It occupies a basin created by tectonic activity in the Kashmir Valley, fed principally by the Jhelum along with the Madhumati and Arin streams, and is widely held to be a shrunken remnant of a much larger ancient lake, Satisar. Its size varies sharply with the season, from around 30 sq km in the dry months to close to 190 sq km after the summer melt, and it was among India's first Ramsar sites, designated a Wetland of International Importance on 23 March 1990.

Sambhar Lake, straddling Jaipur and Nagaur districts of Rajasthan and ringed by the Aravalli hills, is India's largest inland saline lake. It too occupies a tectonic depression, an elliptical basin roughly 35 km long, fed by seasonal streams including the Mendha and the Khari, and was designated a Ramsar site on the same date as Wular, 23 March 1990. Sambhar produces roughly 196,000 tonnes of salt a year, about a tenth of India's total salt output, and after the Rann of Kutch it is the country's most important wintering ground for flamingos. The contrast is worth holding in mind precisely because it is the kind of pairing UPSC likes: Wular and Sambhar share an origin (tectonic) and a designation year (1990) but sit at opposite ends of the freshwater-to-saline spectrum.

Glacial Lakes of the Higher Himalaya

Glacial lakes sit well above the tree line, where a valley glacier has either eroded a rock basin or left behind a moraine dam. Gangabal Lake, at the foot of Mount Harmukh in the Kashmir Himalaya at about 3,570 m, is a clean example: it is fed directly by meltwater from Harmukh's north-eastern glacier, sits beside the smaller Nundkol lake, and drains down into the Sindh river, itself a Jhelum tributary. Because these lakes depend on active glacier melt rather than monsoon runoff, their water level and extent shift with the season far more visibly than a tectonic or oxbow lake's does, and most of them sit in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim, wherever a valley glacier persists today or persisted recently enough to leave its basin behind.

Oxbow Lakes: A Signature of a Mature River

Where a river's channel meanders across a flat floodplain, as most Peninsular and lower Himalayan rivers do once they reach the plains, the loop of a meander can eventually be cut off from the main current entirely, leaving a crescent-shaped lake stranded beside the river's new, straighter course. This is an oxbow lake, and it is a depositional feature of a river's old age, not its youth. Kanwar Lake (Kabartal Wetland), in Begusarai district, Bihar, is the named example UPSC has most reason to test: it is reckoned Asia's largest freshwater oxbow lake, formed by the historical meandering of the Burhi Gandak (a Ganga tributary), and it was declared a Ramsar site on 21 July 2020, the first wetland in Bihar to be so designated. It floods to a depth of around 1.5 m across the monsoon and functions as a natural floodwater sink for a state where a large share of the land is flood-prone, alongside supporting large numbers of migratory birds each winter.

Crater Lakes: Lonar, the Meteorite-Impact Exception

Lonar Lake, in Buldhana district, Maharashtra, sits inside a near circular crater about 1.8 km across and roughly 137 to 150 m deep, cut into the basalt of the Deccan Traps. The crucial fact, and the exam trap, is that Lonar was not created by volcanism: it is the site of a hypervelocity meteorite impact, generally dated to the Pleistocene, tens of thousands of years ago, and it remains the only confirmed impact crater on Earth formed in basaltic rock rather than in the harder crystalline rock most other impact craters sit in. That makes it scientifically valuable as a stand-in for studying impact craters on the basalt-covered surface of the Moon. The lake itself has no outflow, which has concentrated minerals in its water over time and left it both saline and alkaline, distinct chemically from a typical freshwater crater lake elsewhere in the world. It was declared a Ramsar site on 22 July 2020 and is also a notified National Geo-heritage Monument.

Lagoon and Coastal Lakes: Chilika, Pulicat and Vembanad

A lagoon forms where a long sandbar or barrier spit grows across a shallow bay, sealing most of it off from the open sea and leaving a shallow, brackish water body behind, connected to the ocean only through a narrow mouth or inlet.

Chilika Lake, on the coast of Odisha, is Asia's largest brackish water lagoon, separated from the Bay of Bengal by a long sandy ridge and linked to it through a channel near Satapada. Its area swings from about 900 sq km in the dry season to over 1,100 sq km after the monsoon, fed by the Mahanadi's distributaries and by 52 smaller streams. Chilika and Rajasthan's Keoladeo Ghana National Park were designated on the same day, 1 October 1981, making them jointly India's first Ramsar sites. Nalabana Island, inside the lagoon, is a major bird sanctuary, and Chilika is also home to a resident population of Irrawaddy dolphins, both regularly tested facts.

Pulicat Lake, straddling the Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu border (most of it in Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati and Nellore districts, the rest in Tamil Nadu), is India's second largest brackish water lagoon after Chilika, fed by the Arani, Swarnamukhi and Kalangi rivers and separated from the Bay of Bengal by Sriharikota island. Despite its size and its bird sanctuary, Pulicat spent years without India's official Ramsar designation even as smaller wetlands carried it, a genuine exam trap against assuming every major named wetland is automatically listed. That gap closed on 6 May 2026, when the Union government formally declared it a Ramsar site.

Vembanad Lake, Kerala's largest lake and, at roughly 96.5 km, India's longest lake, is the central water body of the Kerala backwaters, mostly fresh water in its northern reaches but increasingly saline towards the sea in the south. The Thanneermukkom bund regulates that salinity divide. Designated a Ramsar site (as the Vembanad-Kol Wetland) on 19 August 2002, it is India's second largest Ramsar site by area after the Sundarbans, and it hosts the Nehru Trophy boat race every August.

Artificial Lakes: Reservoirs Behind India's Dams

A reservoir created by damming a river is a lake by every functional measure, water body, catchment, evaporation, fish and bird life, even though its origin is engineering rather than geology. Govind Sagar (behind the Bhakra dam on the Satluj), Gandhi Sagar (on the Chambal), Nagarjuna Sagar (on the Krishna) and Hirakud Reservoir (on the Mahanadi, and among the largest artificial lakes in Asia by shoreline length) are the standing named examples. The dams themselves, their purposes and the states they irrigate are covered in depth in the companion note on India's drainage systems and mineral resources; the point worth carrying here is simply that "artificial" is its own genetic category alongside the five natural ones above, not a subtype of any of them.

The Major Waterfalls of India

A waterfall forms wherever a river's bed drops sharply, commonly at the edge of a plateau, across a fault scarp, or where a tributary joins a main valley at a higher level than the valley floor (a hanging valley). UPSC tests a small, recurring set of named waterfalls, almost always by river, state and one distinguishing fact.

Jog Falls, on the Sharavathi river in Shivamogga district, Karnataka, is India's most famous waterfall and, at around 253 m, one of its tallest. What makes it distinctive is that it is not a single sheet of falling water but four separate cascades side by side, Raja (a sheer, near-vertical column), Roarer (the loudest, crashing into a rock hollow before rejoining Raja), Rocket (a high-velocity jet) and Rani (a gentler, winding sheet of foam), each with its own character. Flow is now regulated by the Linganamakki dam upstream, so the falls run at their full, spectacular volume only when the dam's gates are opened during the monsoon.

Dudhsagar Falls sits on the Mandovi river (called the Mahadayi upstream in Karnataka) on the Goa-Karnataka border, inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park. It drops around 310 m across four tiers and takes its name, "sea of milk", from the frothy white sheet the water forms in full monsoon flow.

Chitrakoot Falls, on the Indravati river in Bastar district, Chhattisgarh, is comparatively short at about 30 m but is India's widest waterfall, spreading to nearly 300 m across during peak monsoon in a horseshoe curve that has earned it the nickname "the Niagara of India".

Hundru Falls, on the Subarnarekha river about 45 km from Ranchi in Jharkhand, drops roughly 98 m (320 feet) and is reckoned the highest waterfall in that state.

Athirappilly Falls, on the Chalakudy river in Thrissur district, Kerala, at the entrance to the Sholayar forest range of the Western Ghats, drops about 24 m (80 feet). It is Kerala's largest waterfall, also nicknamed a "Niagara of South India" (a title several of these falls share, a good reminder that the nickname itself is never a safe way to identify which waterfall a question means), and the surrounding forest is known for its hornbill population.

Dhuandhar Falls, on the Narmada near Jabalpur, sits inside the companion drainage note's territory and is not re-explained here beyond flagging it as part of any comprehensive waterfall list: it belongs on this page precisely because a "major waterfalls of India" question would otherwise look incomplete without it.

The "Highest Waterfall in India" Trap

This title is genuinely contested, and that is exactly why it is worth knowing precisely rather than picking whichever name feels most familiar. By total height including its tiers, Kunchikal Falls, on the Varahi river near the Shivamogga-Udupi border in Karnataka, is usually cited as India's highest at around 455 m, though its flow has been sharply reduced since the Mani dam was built upstream for hydroelectric power. By height in a single, unbroken plunge, Nohkalikai Falls, near Sohra (Cherrapunji) in Meghalaya, holds the title at around 340 m, and is usually described as India's tallest plunge waterfall. Jog Falls, at 253 m, is neither of these by strict ranking, but remains the most celebrated because it is the tallest waterfall in India that falls without breaking into tiers along a single visible face, a genuinely different criterion from either of the other two. A UPSC question that simply says "highest waterfall in India" without specifying the criterion is testing exactly this ambiguity.

  • Vembanad Lake (Kerala): India's longest lake (about 96.5 km), part of the Kerala backwaters, Ramsar site since 2002.
  • Jog Falls (Sharavathi, Karnataka): four named cascades (Raja, Roarer, Rocket, Rani), about 253 m, regulated by the Linganamakki dam.
  • Dudhsagar Falls (Mandovi/Mahadayi, Goa-Karnataka border): about 310 m, four tiers.
  • Chitrakoot Falls (Indravati, Chhattisgarh): India's widest waterfall, about 300 m wide in monsoon, only about 30 m high.
  • Hundru Falls (Subarnarekha, Jharkhand): about 98 m, the state's highest.
  • Athirappilly Falls (Chalakudy, Kerala): about 24 m, Kerala's largest waterfall.
  • The "highest waterfall in India" title depends on the criterion: Kunchikal Falls (Varahi, Karnataka, about 455 m) by total tiered height, Nohkalikai Falls (Meghalaya, about 340 m) by single unbroken plunge, Jog Falls (253 m) as the tallest that falls without breaking into tiers.
