The shape of the exam
The three stages
Every UPSC Civil Services attempt runs through the same three gates, in the same order, each one a hard filter for the next.
Stage 1
Prelims, two objective papers
GS Paper 1 (200 marks, ranks you) and CSAT (200 marks, qualifying only). A single day, purely a filter, these marks do not carry forward into your final rank.
Stage 2
Mains, nine written papers
Essay, GS Papers 1 to 4, two optional-subject papers, plus two qualifying language papers. 1,750 marks decide most of your final rank.
Stage 3
The interview, 275 marks
A personality test before a UPSC board, built around the form you fill out after Prelims. Combined with your written score, this produces the final merit list.
2,025 total marks decide everything. 1,750 written (Mains) plus 275 (interview), Prelims marks never enter that final sum, they only decide who gets to sit Mains at all.Can you sit this exam
Eligibility
Minimum age
21 years, as on the notification's cutoff date, same across every category.
Education
A graduate degree from a recognised university. Final-year students may sit Prelims, but must show proof of graduation before the Mains form.
Nationality
An Indian citizen for the IAS and IPS; a few other listed services also accept certain other nationalities under conditions set by the government.

How the year unfolds
A typical annual calendar
Exact dates shift every year, but the shape of the cycle has stayed consistent: roughly 15 to 16 months from notification to final result.
Notification (January or February). The exam notification and application window open.
Prelims (May or June). The single-day, two-paper objective exam. GS Paper 1 and CSAT.
Prelims result (About 3 to 4 weeks later). Only those who clear the CSAT threshold and are within the GS Paper 1 cutoff move on.
Mains (August or September). Nine written papers across several days.
Mains result (Roughly December to March). Determines who is called for interview.
Interview (Spread across several months). Personality test before a UPSC board, scheduled in batches.
Final result (Around May or June, the following year). Combined written plus interview score produces the final merit list and service allocation.
You are preparing for two exams at once for most of the cycle. Mains preparation realistically needs to start well before the Prelims result, there is not enough runway between a June result and an August Mains sitting otherwise.Pick your stage
