The Ministry of Home Affairs said on 26 August 2026 that the Centre was closely monitoring the fallout of a flash flood in Nepal given the risk to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewing preparedness with the Chief Ministers of both states and local administration, rescue teams and the National Disaster Response Force placed on high alert in vulnerable border districts. The Central Water Commission reported a sudden rise in the Trishuli river at Furke Khola in Nepal, about 160 kilometres from the Indian border, suspected to have been caused by a flash flood or a glacial lake outburst flood, and warned that the floodwaters could travel downstream through the Gandak river system into India. The MHA said water levels in reservoirs on the Nepal side were receding and the situation remained under control, with officials from the MHA, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ministry of Defence continuing to monitor developments.
